Homemade No-Fail Bread Recipe
This simple, rustic bread has a golden crust, fluffy center, and that comforting homemade aroma that fills your kitchen. Once you try it, store-bought bread won’t stand a chance!
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons (60 ml) olive oil
- 1 tablespoon (10 g) dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1⅓ cups (320 ml) warm water (not hot — about 100°F / 38°C)
- 4¾ cups (570 g) plain all-purpose flour
Instructions
Activate the Yeast
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, dry yeast, and olive oil.
- Let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until the surface becomes foamy and bubbly.
This step is crucial — it means your yeast is alive and ready to make your bread rise beautifully.
Make the Dough
- Stir in salt.
- Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or spatula.
- When the dough starts to come together, use your hands to knead it in the bowl until it forms a soft, slightly tacky ball.
Knead the Dough
- Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Good kneading develops gluten, which gives your bread that perfect structure and chewiness.
First Rise (Proofing)
- Lightly oil a clean bowl, place the dough inside, and cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap.
- Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
Tip: If your kitchen is cool, place the bowl in an unheated oven with just the light on — it’s the perfect proofing spot.
Shape the Bread
- Once risen, punch the dough down gently to release air bubbles.
- Shape it into a round or oblong loaf (or divide into rolls if you prefer).
- Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper or in a lightly greased loaf pan.
Second Rise
- Cover and let the shaped dough rest for another 30–40 minutes, until puffy.
- Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Bake to Golden Perfection
- Bake the bread for 25–30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Optional: Brush with a little olive oil while still warm for a glossy, soft crust.
Storage Tips
- Keep at room temperature, wrapped in a clean towel or airtight bag, for up to 3 days.
- For longer storage, slice and freeze in a zip bag; toast straight from frozen!
Optional Flavor Twists
Add herbs like rosemary, thyme, or oregano to the dough for a Mediterranean touch.
Mix in roasted garlic for a fragrant garlic bread loaf.
Sprinkle cheese on top before baking for a cheesy crust.
